Project Controls Training in Australia
Connexion Systems and Elemental Projects
A practical pathway to project controls capability
Connexion Systems and Elemental Projects deliver practical project controls training across Australia, helping participants understand and apply work breakdown structures, scheduling, baselines, Earned Value Management and project forecasting.
We currently have two offerings, based on participant experience. Courses are developed and delivered jointly by Connexion Systems and Elemental Projects, combining Elemental’s methodology, learning design and facilitation with Connexion’s project controls technology expertise and practical application of enterprise scheduling and EVM tools.
Choose your project controls course
1 Day
Foundations of Project Controls
Understand and interpret
Focus
Reading and interpreting a WBS, schedule, baseline and EVM report
Software
A brief, high-level look at how these concepts appear in the Deltek PPM tools
Suitable for
Project team members and coordinators, project managers early in their development, junior or emerging schedulers and cost controllers, and organisations building project controls literacy across a broader workforce, including Defence, government, infrastructure and industry alike
2 Days
Advanced Project Controls
Build, calculate and apply
Focus
Building and calculating artefacts yourself, from a real project case study
Software
Practical exercises using Deltek PPM Scheduling (OPP) and EVM software (Cobra)
Suitable for
Schedulers, cost controllers and analysts, project managers and PMO staff who need to build and apply these disciplines directly, and organisations upskilling an existing team. Suits standalone attendance or as the natural next step after Foundations

1-Day Instructor-Led Course
Foundations of Project Controls Course
An accessible, practical introduction to how projects are planned, monitored and controlled.
This course is designed for people who need to understand and interpret project controls without yet needing to build the full set of project controls artefacts themselves. Delivered jointly by Connexion Systems and Elemental Projects.
Who the course is for
Project team members and coordinators, project managers early in their development, junior or emerging schedulers and cost controllers, and organisations building project controls literacy across a broader workforce. This includes Defence, government, infrastructure and industry alike.
What you will learn
Projects run better when the people around a project understand the language and logic behind a schedule, a baseline and a performance report. Not just the specialists who run it.
This course gives participants fluency in a single day. Attendees will have the confidence to read a project’s reporting and ask relevant questions about it.
Course outcomes
Understand the limitations of traditional, self-reported project status and what an integrated, evidence-based approach provides instead
Build a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) from a project scope, applying the core WBS rules
Explain what a network diagram and a critical path represent, and identify one on a simple example
Read a project baseline and a set of Earned Value Management (EVM) figures, and translate them into performance narrative
Recognise what EVM is and is not. Determine the right approach for a given project
Recognise common project controls pitfalls that undermine data integrity, and the practices that guard against them
Understand where real-world Project Controls tools fit into the workflow.
Ready to go further?
Advanced Project Controls (2 days) is where these same concepts are built, calculated and applied hands-on.
2-Day Instructor-Led Course
Advanced Project Controls Course
An intensive, practical program in building, calculating and applying project controls across the full project lifecycle.
We dive into the Work Breakdown Structure, working baseline, performance measurement and forecasting aspects of a project. This course is built around a single, continuous project case study.
Who is it for?
Practitioners already working in or adjacent to project controls roles. Schedulers, cost controllers and analysts, project managers and PMO staff who need to build and apply these disciplines themselves, and organisations upskilling an existing team.
Suited to standalone attendance or as the natural next step after Foundations.
Why it matters
The challenge is often not understanding each discipline in isolation, but applying scope, schedule, cost and performance management together on a live project. Participants progressively build the project’s core controls artefacts from first principles and work through the calculations by hand.
For Defence and government participants, the course also develops disciplines that support credible baselines, effective EVM practice and preparation for Integrated Baseline Reviews, with AS 4817 referenced as relevant industry context.
Course outcomes
Build a Work Breakdown Structure and use it as the foundation for a schedule and a budget
Build a network diagram and conduct a full critical path analysis, and perform the equivalent scheduling work in Open Plan Professional
Apply a cost-estimating technique and build a time-phased budget
Construct an Integrated Baseline from your budget
Measure project performance against the baseline and calculate the core EVM metrics by hand, and with practical exercises in Deltek Cobra.
Calculate and interpret the key forecasting metrics used to project a likely project outcome
Exercise sound judgement about when EVM is the right approach, and recognise the data-integrity pitfalls that undermine it in practice
